UV radiation is the biggest culprit – the sun triggers melanin production and the spots build up over time.
Hormonal changes, e.g. during pregnancy or when taking the contraceptive pill, can cause larger, symmetrical patches on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.
Marks left behind after acne, eczema or other irritation.
They get worse with sun exposure and take time to fade, but it can be done. By supplying nutrients and important fatty acids to the skin barrier, ideally from both the inside and the outside, the skin becomes more resilient to external stress and counteracts overactive melanin production.
Did you know?
Hyperpigmentation is an umbrella term for darker spots or areas on the skin. It occurs when the skin's pigment cells produce an excess of melanin – the substance that gives skin its colour. The result shows up as brown or greyish-brown spots, often on the face, hands and décolletage.

Advanced well-ageing skincare; serum and day, night, and eye cream
Easily absorbed Omega-3, -6 (GLA), -7 and -9 that moisturise and strengthen the skin from within
Follow the routine daily
Spray the oil into your palm and “dab” your fingertips in the oil – then massage it into your scalp instead of spraying directly.
Brush your scalp and hair with a soft natural-bristle brush in the morning to loosen build-up and dry flakes.
Feel free to wash your hair twice with Quick Relief Shampoo. It lathers less than a traditional shampoo – but cleans just as well.
Give it time. If the problems have been around for many years, it takes longer to get your scalp back in balance.
The skin on your scalp becomes stressed when it lacks natural oils and starts trying to compensate, which leads to an overproduction of sebum. It is also common for the microflora balance of the scalp to be disrupted when it is too dry. We recommend using Intensive Nourishing Serum, an oil serum that moisturises and counteracts problems caused by dryness. Massage the serum into your scalp in the evening and leave it on overnight.
In the morning, wash your hair with Quick Relief Shampoo, a treatment shampoo that restores the microflora balance of the scalp. Use it like an ordinary shampoo, and ideally wash your hair twice. If you use conditioner, our Q Conditioner is a good choice. It is unscented, nourishing and doesn't trigger a dry, and therefore more sensitive, scalp.
We recommend combining Q Balancing Booster with our Lingonberry Hi-tech Serum in Cream, as they enhance each other's effects. Hyperpigmentation is usually caused by stress in the skin. The melanocytes, found in our outermost skin barrier, are easily thrown off balance, and with the nutrients in Lingonberry Hi-tech Serum in Cream (Omega 3/6, natural vitamin E, Hops, Matrixyl) combined with Q Balancing Booster, many of our customers have achieved incredibly good results.
It contains essential fatty acids and carotenoids that strengthen the skin barrier and reduce the stress in the skin that drives overactive melanin production.
Absolutely, that's right. We often hear from happy customers who have finally achieved a more even skin tone thanks to Lingonberry Serum in Cream. Lingonberry seed oil is rich in omega fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6) and powerful antioxidants, which are important for balancing the stress in the skin (specifically in the melanocytes, which produce melanin). Hops have also been added, which also help to even out skin tone.
We usually also recommend using Q Balancing Booster (facial toner), which is rich in vitamin B3 (niacinamide), shown in many studies to be effective for hyperpigmentation. As you've probably already gathered, we believe in nourishing the skin – ideally from both the inside and the outside – because it creates a synergy effect, but it's not a must!
In the same way that the products care for the skin on your face, they care for the skin on your neck and décolletage to counteract pigmentation, improve elasticity and give radiance and softness. Just like the skin on your face, the skin on your neck and décolletage needs to be moisturised every day.
Serums exist to give an extra effect/be more powerful, which means the product needs a more concentrated, active ingredient. A serum can either work at the level of the skin barrier or be deep-acting – that is, penetrate the skin barrier.
As for the lingonberry serum, it contains something as unusual as 4 different serum ingredients, which also produce these synergy effects. They are:
1. Lingonberry seed oil (maximum dose), which contains a high concentration of Omega 3 that has been proven to penetrate the skin barrier, reach the basal cell layer and stimulate cell renewal and microcirculation. Omega 3 also counteracts/reduces hyperpigmentation (proven in scientific studies, and there is a patent for it).
2. Matrixyl (at maximum dose) is a micro-collagen that penetrates the skin barrier and stimulates both collagen and hyaluronic acid in the dermis (proven in many scientific studies). Another important point is that serums with Matrixyl are perfectly suitable for daytime use too, as they don't make you sensitive to the sun the way vitamin A derivatives do, which unfortunately can also cause problems for sensitive skin. Matrixyl is classed as suitable for sensitive skin.
3. Hyaluronic acid: strengthens the moisture barrier at skin-barrier level – in other words, your skin's first line of defence against dry indoor air and cold/wind.
4. Probiotic enzyme: strengthens the skin barrier and balances and optimises the microflora (part of the first line of defence).
The serum is also boosted with hops to optimise results when hyperpigmentation has already developed, for a more even skin tone.
